Hey guys, I just got back from my first day attempting pick-up and the results were great. I went with a guy named Versatile to a local mall. Our goal was to destroy approach anxiety and MAYBE do opinion openers if things went well.
So what we did is take turns, I went up one side of the mall asking "Hi, how are you?" to someone about once every 5 seconds. I probably said this about 30-40 times. At first it was really hard but then it was very easy to do. Then Versatile took his turn down the other side. Some people would ignore me, while others would smile. It seems like you get the best responses when you have eye contact with the person and smile at them while they are still 5 yards (or meters) away. It seemed to me that if I tried greeting them when they were closer than this they weren't ready or expecting communication.
Anyway, this went so well and we were feeling so good we decided to do challenge #2 since we were already at the mall. I went with "Hey guys, do you know where I can get a cool necklace or some bracelets?". I started off actually approaching a moving 4 set with this one and actually got them to stop. They were asking me questions and stuff like what sort of style I wanted and were pointing me to all these different stores. It was great! After that set I approached a moving 2 set (got them to stop) and a 1 set who was standing. Those went alright, but not as great as the 4 set. Versatile also opened sets, and had a blast.
This was a great experience, thanks to Jack for putting up the videos. I can't wait to see the next challenges!
