Many questions about style

Postby Christopher_Walken on Tue Jul 29, 2008 11:31 pm

Alright guys, I've come to the conclusion that my wardrobe completely sucks. It sucks really bad. My jeans are baggy, my collared shirts are dorky, I have one pair of running shoes, and most of my t-shirts I got for free or have companies names on them. (I'm like that pre-pickup version of Jdogg that he has on his own cell phone).

Essentially I need new everything: shirts, jeans, boots/shoes, accessories, etc

Now my question is this: how much should I be prepared to spend?

I've looked online and designer jeans appear to be $100-$250. A stylish pair of boots (non-sketchers or doc martins) appear to be $100+ and quality shirts are $60+.

I have a job, so I do have the money to spend, but are there other options? I'm definitely not buying anymore clothes at Target or JC Penny but if you guys have any favorite stores I would be interested. I have mostly been looking at Macy's and Guess's websites.

Also where are your favorite places to get accessories such as rings and necklaces?

Thanks guys !

if you want advice, i suggest you read mans magazines like fhm, mens health, gq. The ones with loads of guys dressed up.

Secondly, ask you friends who are girls to help you out. make sure they stick to things that would suit you.

or you could go shopping, and ask random girls, who dress good. Ask them thier opinion on two shirts, or two jeans. start a conversation from that. Sometimes, they might help you out with ideas.

Remember girls are good at fashion and style, they are the ones you should ask advice from. especially the ones you are attracted to, cause they will dress you like the guys they like.

but if you go down this route of asking girls their advice, dont follow it blindly, debate it, make fun of their choice, ask for reasons. otherwise they will dress you up like you are there real live barbie and ken doll.

or you could go and get fashion consultation, but that will cost you some bucks.

Go and watch some episodes of queer eye for the straight guy, it was on a few years ago, i dont know if it is still on, but that was a great show for fashion, i used to copy some of the stuff, as i used to work at a departments store and mens fashion, and i used to give loads of tips, which mainly came from that show, and the guys g/f loved it .

Hey, thanks guys for the feedback. I will definitely ask for some women's opinions (ooo opinion openers!) and I'll prepare to shell out the dough.
Confidence or competence? I'll take both.

This is a tough question to answer well. A lot depends on your body type and the general style you want to portray. A perfect example of how advice like this can be poorly dispensed is in the show "The Pickup Artist". That fred guy totally didn't get it and dressed poorly for his body type and age (ok, and that stuff was horrid!). Further complicating this is the lack of knowing how you want to portray yourself. By that I mean are you a cowboy? A business guy? A student? A Biker? all could pose very different answers to the question.

My advice? Take some time to decide what image you want to portray (what your avatar is) then research other guys with similar body types to yours that look good - ask women about this as well (another good opinion opener!) and then look at not only what they wear, but why the outfit works, so you can apply that knowledge to your shopping efforts.

Personally? I prefer stores Like Bachrach (www.bachrach.com) - but hate how they merchandise their models! They have decent accessories as well - IF that's the look you're going for.

For Watches, I prefer something different than the norm (it's a nice area to subtlely peacock and add conversational pieces.) I like STORM of London http://www.stormwatches.com/ they have a decent selection of off the beaten path watches from subdued (the Expo) to funky (the Vice). Again, just make sure that whatever you select fits your avatar.

Lastly, don't be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone. If you're used to baggy and branded, tighter fitting and mod patterned might feel weird, but it might look GREAT. Also remember, things on a mannequin / shelf look totally different when worn, so try that shit on! it won't hurt, and may surprise you :)

good insight from qixsilver..
ooo qixsilver thanks for that site. they have pimping men's watches! =)

also - chris, make sure you are not afraid of change... first step is to find yourself, second step is to change to who you are.

Hi guys, thanks for the advice again. I went to the mall last weekend and got some fashionable jeans that actually fit well from Express. They look much better than my old baggy levi's. While I was there I chatted with some of the girls working there while I was waiting for the changing rooms to open up. (I'm just trying to take small steps right now).

So now I just need boots and some shirts, for the shirts I am probably going to go to Guess because they have stylish long sleeved collared shirts that I like.

Oh yeah I will probably get some sort of watch as well, all I have are metal diving watches that aren't very good conversation pieces.

I think accessories are superfluous tbh. I have a few rings, a watch and a necklace I used to roll with, but Honestly, the idea behind all of this is to help portray an interesting version of yourself. ie Breaking up a pair of jeans and a blazer with a T-shirt and an eyebrow piercing may get the girl wondering what you're about because clearly, you're not going to work at the bank looking like that.

BUT

I feel the way you dress should exist primarily to make you feel better about yourself, and as a result more confident. It certainly doesn't hurt to make yourself more physically appealing, and maybe a little more interesting, but what's ultimately going to get (or lose) the girl is the way you carry yourself during the interaction - no matter what style of game you're using.

That said, certain looks do appeal more to certain types of girls. Christopher Walken, before you invest too heavily in your wardrobe, think about the types of girls you want to attract, then go look for the ones who are taken, see how the guys they're with are dressed. What do they all have in common stylewise? Now dress a little cooler and you'll be that much closer to attracting the kind of women you want. It boils back to congruence. Do you look like the type of man that you are portraying with the other facets of your game?

H & M =D..dunno if they have them in Seattle.
I would say Winner's if you dont wanna break the bank too much because you could still find a few good things there but its not in the U.S. and Marshalls has alot of large clothing...

Just make sure you dont feel TOO out of place. Its okay a little but too much is gonna mess with your head.

As far as T-Shirts go something I learnt is alot of it is the fitting. Definately depends on your body type

T.K.maxx is a great place to buy big label clothes with a tiny price tag aswel(I don’t know if there's a t.k.maxx in the U.S. or Canada thou)

The other month i bought a pair of Firetrap jean's which are usually about £80 a pair but i got a pair for £25 they had been reduced from £60 not bad hey.

I also got a cool No Fear t-shirt for £6 reduced from £20.

You don’t want to spend too much on cloths thou because you don’t wanna attract gold diggers do you? And also the clothes/style you like today may not be the clothes/style you like 6month from now.

I am slowly building up a quality avatar.

hey man i know im hitting this thread a little behind the mark but here are my fashion tips. First. Hit up outlet malls and check for guess and aeropostale jeans. They are the most fashionable cuts that can be bought for a reasonable price. Dont go for classic denim, go for things like light denim and sand wash.

As for shirts, there is no need to over do it. Banana republic has a real nice lineup of graphic t-s that go great with a white undershirt. If your looking for polos, My recommendation is hollister or lacoste. Lacoste will cost you a little more but it is significantly more baller.

Get a watch that stands out too. I have a Nixon Rotolog and it gets so much attention its not e even funny. ImageThey have a great variety of watches that will definitely arouse interest when you are out
